601 43454 - Mason Jazz Intensive - 2 Credit Hours

Educators seeking professional development may participate in the Mason Jazz Intensive and earn two college credits. Participants will have a chance to explore improvisation, expand their theory knowledge, and participate in ensembles while learning valuable pedagogical tools along the way. The MJI is ideal for K-12 educators and private instructors who wish to gain additional experience in jazz and grow professionally. This course runs concurrently with the Mason Jazz Camp.

Please note: this course is not part of the Orff & Kodaly curriculum

Orff & Kodaly Features:

608 43349 - "Side-by-Side" Kodaly Inspired Children's Choir - 3 Credit Hours

Music Teachers, who have completed at least one level of Kodály training, will continue to hone their personal Musicianship Skills and observe master Kodaly-Inspired Teachers as they work with our onsite Children’s Choir Camp. Participants will plan and teach lessons to choir students and reflect upon their lessons with Kodaly Levels Faculty and fellow peers.

"Side-by-Side Prerequisite: Participants must have completed at least Level 1 Kodály training.

609 43301 - Master Class: Building on the Past, Looking Toward the Future - 3 Credit Hours

Taking inspiration from primary sources (i.e., MFC Vols and Supplementals) and historic dance forms, participants in this master class will focus on creating new elemental works applicable to a variety of contexts and appropriate for diverse media. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with other teachers as well as develop their own individual understanding and execution of elemental style.

This master class will include an emphasis on music composition and as such, participants enrolling in this class should be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of musical notation and be acquainted with fundamental music theory concepts (e.g., intervals, scales, chords).

Master Class Prerequisite: Students must have completed Orff Level III to register.

610 43302 - Summer Conducting Symposium Wind Band Track - 2 Credit Hours

Participants will have an opportunity to conduct multiple times throughout the week, receive feedback and guidance from all conducting faculty, participate in group score study sessions, and observe other conducting participants. Each participant is expected to play as an ensemble member when not conducting on the podium. Participants will select one of two tracks for repertoire focus: orchestral or wind band. This is the wind band track.

612 43304 - Head Voice: How to Teach and Preserve One's Voice - 1 Credit Hour

Healthy speaking and singing is not just for our students, but for those teaching on a daily basis whether in the general music or choral classroom. Work-life balance and understanding how to engage your singing technique in your speaking “teacher-voice” is crucial so that vocal issues do not arise. In this course, you will learn more in-depth vocal pedagogy that allows you to maximize your breath, resonance, phonation, and, in the end, vocal endurance. Additionally, course content is transferable to your work with singers of any age.

613 43305 - Sing & Play with Children's Literature Today - 1 Credit Hour

Come create and perform movement and music inspired by diverse children’s literature and social emotional learning opportunities. Participants will be encouraged to share their favorite books throughout the week, as well as receive lesson ideas and create and share their own lessons.

614 43352 - You Belong Here! Fostering Students' Emotional Intelligence Through Creativity and Movement - 1 Credit Hour

How can we use movement, music, visual arts, poetry and stories to help nurture our students’ emotional well-being? How can movement, in particular, be used as an accessible entry point for elementary-aged students to develop their creative abilities?

In this course, participants will experience a series of movement-based elemental creative projects. The instructor will model activities which can foster children’s sense of belonging, nurture their creative sparks, grow their aesthetic intelligence, build their confidence, and allow them to express their emotions through the arts. This course will include a variety of materials appropriate for elementary-aged children, with some attention given to adaptations for younger children.

618 43604 - Engage, Elevate, Empower: Teacher Well-Being & Artistic Social Emotional Learning (SEL) for the Performing Arts Educator - 1 Credit Hour

This three-day professional development workshop will provide performing arts educators with: research-based well-being practices to consistently restore teacher & student health and well-being inside and outside of the classroom; teaching methods & strategies to improve student focus, engagement, and artistry; and the rudiments of Artistic Social Emotional Learning and their application to empower teacher and student Identity, Belonging and Agency. 

This Professional Development workshop is recommended for current or former K-12 performing arts teachers or currently enrolled undergraduate/graduate/certificate students in a performing arts education program (pre-service). This workshop is also open to studio performing arts teachers who work with students in K-12 on a regular basis. 

Requirements

Enrollment limited to students with a class of Advanced to Candidacy, Graduate, Non-Degree or Senior Plus.

Enrollment is limited to Graduate, Non-Degree or Undergraduate level students.

Students in a Non-Degree Undergraduate degree may not enroll.
